ABSTRACT

Richard Brown received a useful, sound, and thorough education at the parish school of Dolphinton. His subsequent education, in addition to attendance at private classes and at the Law classes of the University of Edinburgh, consisted of continuous self-culture and extensive travel during holiday times, extending over a period of about twenty years, in France, Spain, Algiers, Italy, Germany, United States of America, Canada, and other countries. Richard Brown was elected a Member of the Council of the Society of Accountants on 4th February 1891, and was appointed Secretary and Treasurer on 3rd February 1892, an office which he retained, with the greatest acceptance, until there was unanimously conferred upon him, on 2nd February 1916, the highest honour the Society could bestow, that of being their President, which he held at the time of his death. No honour ever came more fittingly and deservedly to any man.
