ABSTRACT

In a political moment of extreme cynicism and despair, every election is a chance to reset our political climate and change the way we take power through our vote. Public schools allowed us to ground our politics in an issue that resonated all across the state. Pennsylvania ranks 50th—the worst in the nation—when it comes to the funding gap between the poorest and wealthiest school districts. It means that the cynical and corporate-driven politics of both parties have failed us. By 2014, the coalition that rose up around the fight for our public schools was unlike any that had been seen before—it united so many threads of author city’s social justice fabric. Public education resonates in every state and especially in states that the Democratic party has lost over the decades.
