Finding Our Way Together

Exploring the Therapeutic Benefits of Collaborative Craft Activism
ByLauren Leone

This chapter describes a participatory action research project in which the author, collaborating with a sewing group at a community health center located in a Boston-area neighborhood, investigated the potential therapeutic benefits of craft activism through a collaborative quilt project that aimed to raise community awareness of the issues of gentrification and displacement impacting the neighborhood. The chapter demonstrates how craft activism holds the therapeutic potential and community enhancing benefits of craft and can function as a form of community-based practice in which individuals are supported in being agents of social change. The author outlines the knowledge generated by the group, including the therapeutic benefits of collaborative craft activism.
