ABSTRACT

With the rapid development of cinema construction, the increasing number of cinema screens, and moviegoers, China’s film market has grown annually by 30 percent in recent years. For the first time, China’s box office in 2010 exceeded 10 billion yuan, which was a 64 percent increase compared with 2009. The box office in 2013 was 20 billion yuan, which made China the second largest film market after North America. In 2015, China’s box office was more than 40 billion yuan, and this figure jumped to 55.911 billion yuan in 2017, an increase of 13.45 percent compared with 49.283 billion yuan in 2016. The top five box office in 2017 were Wolf Warrior 2 (5.68 billion yuan), The Fate of the Furious (2.67 billion yuan), Never Say Die (2.2 billion yuan), Kung Fu Yoga (1.75 billion yuan), and Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back (1.66 billion yuan). The total box office of these five films was approximately 14 billion yuan. The film Wolf Warrior 2 was the biggest contributor to China’s total box office and this chapter discusses its success.
