ABSTRACT
This chapter traces historically the intricate processes of secularization and desecularization in Jammu region. It argues that the two processes are simultaneous and interlinked, thus contesting the conventional theories of a linear, sequential evolution of secularization practices. It also expands on the notion of secularization – socio-cultural secular practices and lived performances – as different from the state-oriented notion of political secularism.
