ABSTRACT

In this chapter, diversity by planting sequence (crop rotation), crop-border diversity, and crop-weed diversity are discussed. The intricate interactions within agricultural systems make it impossible to define simple cause-effect patterns as rotations not only have direct effects on pests and weeds but indirectly affect overall biodiversity within the whole system and by this, in turn again may affect insect pests through the provision of food and shelter to natural enemies, pathogens by the increase of natural biocontrol by enhanced soil microbiomes, and weeds by changes in management practices over time.
