ABSTRACT

Gender equity is a nervous area in China. Gender disparity, especially severe gender imbalance, has caused a lot of social problems in China such as marriage squeeze, marriage migration and instability, reemerging women and girls trafficking market, and mental health problems of involuntary bachelors that threats the social stability. This chapter offers an overview of this nervous area in China and outlines the policy and cultural contexts for the gender imbalance as well as its negative social impacts. The chapter introduces promising correct gender imbalance actions, the “Care for Girls” campaign and the newly launched universal two-child policy, that are adopted by the Chinese government to address the causes and the negative outcomes of the gender imbalance. The policy evaluation and progress indicate that these two policies have been effective in reducing the negative impacts of the gender imbalance. Major challenges and policy implications are further discussed at the end of this chapter.
