ABSTRACT

Nepal is a pioneer in establishing community radio in South Asia, and in Chapter 4 the author claims that it was the presence of alternative voices that significantly contributed to the emergence of community-specific radio stations in the country as a potential tool for community empowerment. The chapter documents how the background, conducive to the openness and democracy espoused by the 2015 Constitution of Nepal, was reflected in the establishment of people’s media by the various communities in Nepal, who were previously marginalised.
