ABSTRACT

The university in America today is in a deep crisis of its own making. In this chapter, the author assumes without much argument that there are real dangers to academic freedom and free speech from the politicization of the campus. For those inclined to doubt, he cite a few instances of what has come to be called political correctness. Now, if one feels strongly about the life of the mind and the intellectual integrity of education, one cannot do nothing. Politicians have their own agendas. Few understand or care about education. Government is already too heavily involved in education now, from budgets to tenure and admissions decisions, to antitrust activities, to wishing to fire some professors, or hire some of their friends, for the inclusion or exclusion of Italian American Studies, Creation Science, and so on.
