ABSTRACT

Stitching is a technique whereby existing brick and stone masonry structures can be strengthened o increase their resistance to compressive, shear and tensile forces and to bond together fractured elements. The technique was evolved in about 1952 by Dr Lizzi, Technical Director of the Italian company Fondedile SpA, to strengthen masonry structures damaged during the Second World War. In Italy the system is known as reticolo cementato, but since it was introduced into the United Kingdom in the early 1960s it has become more widely known as 'stitching' or masonry reinforcement'.
