ABSTRACT

The Gulf Crisis has put the United Nations back at the centre of world politics. The increased cooperation between governments has made the Security Council an important instrument for collective decision-making. Another communication comes from New Delhi, from a journalist and scholar who learned about our events from Development Forum, the regular publication of the UN Department of Public Information for the Joint United Nations Information Committee, and who offered to help us organize future events. Particularly relevant are the positive references to the International Network for a United Nations Second Assembly, the movement for a UN Second Chamber of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the inclusion of the ideas of Maurice Strong. Less recognized may be the broadly educative and dramatically inspirational role of global institutions, notably the UN and its specialized agencies, as well as the supportive and growing galaxy of public interest organizations, known as the UN’s NGOs, together representing the evolving conscience of humanity.
