ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes a systems-based model to provide an overview of elements of nursing care related specifically to the flight environment, enabling the reader to identify solutions to some of the more common nursing care problems. The safety of self and patient will always be the most important consideration during any aeromedical transfer. Although not solely the domain of the nurse, when planning a transfer, attention should always be paid to strategies to minimize risk. The aircraft cabin will not have a store equipped with specialised nursing consumables and supplies, and so anticipation of such needs is vital before undertaking a patient transfer. It is vital that a comprehensive hand-over is received when accepting an elective aeromedical repatriation, not least to ensure that the patient’s condition falls within the practitioner’s level of competence.
