ABSTRACT

This chapter charts the first stages of Lu Hsiu-lien's multifaceted career and follows her as she moves from her role as student to her role as government worker and founder of Taiwan's feminist movement. It examines Lu Hsiu-lien's youth and education on Taiwan and in the United States. The chapter discusses her work in a cross-sectional fashion in her article on women's liberation, the paper presented at the Hong Kong conference, setting up a number of categories and then fitting the various activities she had helped organize into each of these. It begins with the origins of the movement and then traces its evolution, subphase by subphase. The chapter also traces the role played by a rather singular woman in the formation of Taiwanese feminism.
