This chapter presents a different approach to professionalization: eclecticism, the theory or practice of utilizing skills and experiences from a variety of sources within and without the academy. As a key component of contemporary professional roles and values, eclecticism may offer preparatory opportunities not available via other approaches and may be of value to new professionals, as well as those who have not followed linear or more traditional paths to the classroom. Teachers grounding their technology professionalization in eclecticism will know their students can acquire literacy skills in places other than the classroom and as a result of activities other than traditional teaching.
