ABSTRACT

A major object of scientific realism is to produce a theory that can explain the structures and processes found in the real world. As such a theory develops, it must be tested against reality in further research. Peter Duckett used eye movement/miscue analysis (EMMA) methodology to study how relative beginners read picture books. His research tests my transactional theory of reading at the same time that it provides insight into how beginning readers make sense of picture books. Some theorists have suggested that although a transactional model of reading may fit proficient reading, it may not fit developing readers, and others argue that words must be identified automatically before comprehension can occur. Using EMMA methodology, he was able to Study what the eyes were doing in relationship to what the readers were saying as they read orally.
