ABSTRACT

In the past few years, a great deal of research has been undertaken to examine Chinese readers’ reading behavior. However, there is a dearth of research on the analysis of the Chinese reading process, the actual way readers transact with an authentic written Chinese text to make sense of it. Shaomei Wang conducted a study to explore the nature of Chinese reading in relation to Ken Goodman’s transactional sociopsycholinguistic model and theory of reading. By means of miscue analysis, she examined the oral reading of a Chinese text by 12 American adults, using the Wang Taxonomy of Chinese Reading Miscues adapted for the study by Wang from the Goodman Taxonomy of Reading Miscues. The Goodman Taxonomy was originally developed for the analysis of miscues generated by readers in English. As a diagnostic and evaluative tool, it provides researchers with much information about the reading process.
