ABSTRACT

Over the past decade a sizable literature has documented an association of fibronectin with migrating and/or proliferating cell populations during embryogenesis, morphogenesis, wound healing, and tumor invasion. These findings, together with the in vitro data that demonstrate the capacity of fibronectin to bind cells to extracellular matrix and to mediate chemotaxis and perhaps contact guidance, have led to the hypothesis that fibronectin plays an essential role in multicellular organization.
