ABSTRACT

Intelligent robots, like their human counterparts, will best display their skills in situations requiring behaviorial adaptation and flexibility. This chapter describes a program of research aimed at developing an intelligent robot capability for space applications. It provides a brief historical background on the program and its technical organization. The chapter outlines system development goals and robot conceptual architecture supporting them. It also describes some supporting technology development activities. The chapter discusses the supporting testbed architecture and its experimental implementation. It also discusses the underlying functional architecture of the telerobot. The chapter describes the status of testbed development as of 1988. It considers the underlying functional architecture of the telerobot and the status of testbed development as of 1988. The chapter concludes with a brief perspective on needs for future telerobotics research and system development.
