ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some properties of micellar systems, and also discusses statistics of solubilizate distribution among the micelles. A basic stochastic model for intramicellar reaction kinetics is described. The chapter reviews different diffusion models for the case of reactants confined to the interior of micelle: the centered reactant model; and the moving reactant model. It describes diffusion and stochastic models for the case where one reactant is confined to the interior of a sphere and the other to the surface. A diffusion model is provided for the case where all reactants are confined to the surface of a sphere. The partition of the reacting species over microscopic volumes as well as the small number of these species present in each volume suggest the use of a stochastic model of chemical reactions as opposed to the deterministic approach used, for example, in homogeneous chemical kinetics.
