ABSTRACT

This chapter explains some of the main attributes for a dynamic simulator. It discusses the SPEEDUP modeling and simulation environment which has been designed and implemented with these requirements in mind. The chapter describes the interfaces available and shows how they are used in industrial applications for control design and synthesis, operator training, and on-line simulation. It also describes industrial examples and considers the control design and analysis of a separation process in detail. A typical scenario of how models may be employed in a chemical plant follows: The stand-alone executable can be interfaced to a graphical frontend for operator training, an expert system for plant diagnostics, or distributed control systems for on-line simulation. The training simulator is generally used to educate operators to understand process control, to safely operate a plant equipment, and to become familiar with distributed control system.
