Future Directions in Animal Cytokine Research and Applications

ByMichael P. Murtaugh, Michael J. Myers

The molecular cloning of animal cytokines in recent years has opened the door to new opportunities to elucidate the regulation and actions of cytokines in various animal species, to apply the knowledge for the treatment and prevention of disease, and to provide more efficient and economical production of food. It is apparent from the preceding chapters that our knowledge of the inflammatory cytokines, TNF, IL-1, and IL-6, is more advanced in animal species than of most other cytokines with the exception of IL-2. Furthermore, the information is concentrated in cattle, sheep, and swine and is notably lacking in avian species. Nevertheless, our understanding of cytokine biology is advancing rapidly across a broad spectrum of food and companion animal species.
