Biology of Ttomor Necrosis Factor

ByMichael J. Myers, Michael P. Murtaugh

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a pleiotropic cytokine capable of altering physiological and immunological sequelae as well as mediating the pathophysiological responses of several disease conditions. The nature of its discovery highlights the dynamic versatility of TNF. The initial reports by Lloyd Old demonstrated that in vivo LPS administration elicited a protein factor in the blood that was capable of inducing in vivo or in vitro tumor necrosis (1).
