Potentiation of the Immune Response by Cytokines

WithHuw P. A. Hughes, Lorne A. Babiuk

The prevention of infectious disease by the use of cytokines either alone or in combination with current vaccination protocols has received considerable attention in the veterinary field. The possible application of cytokines as biological response modifiers in this sphere can be divided into two general areas: (1) the use of these molecules for the stimulation of nonspecific immune mechanisms, and (2) use of these molecules for elaboration and/or augmentation of specific immunity generated by vaccines. Use of cytokines in the therapy and prophylaxis of infectious disease is covered elsewhere in this book; therefore, the aim of this chapter is to discuss the potential that cytokines have in the enhancement of vaccine-induced immunity.
