ABSTRACT

The feeding of infants from 6 to 24 months of age poses the real nutritional challenge for the 1990s. A relatively new type of infant formula, called follow-on or second age formula, have been in use in Europe for over a decade. Infant formulas are defined by the Codex Alimentarius, a Joint Commission of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food Agricultural Organization (FAO), as “food intended as a liquid part of the weaning diet for the infant from the sixth month on and for young children”. Apple juice is frequently recommended for the therapy of acute gastroenteritis in infants and children. Apples and apple juice have had a long empiric reputation as antidiarrheals since Binberg many years ago recommended raw apples for the treatment of diarrhea. The content of the weaning diet should be a major concern for healthcare providers in developing countries.
