ABSTRACT
Medical management is necessary when an individual sustains an acute, high-level exposure to penetrating radiation, possible internal deposition of radioactive material, or when ordinary trauma or illness occurs in combination with external or internal contamination and/or exposure. While the responsibility for total patient care lies solely with the physician, nurse, and hospital, the health or medical physicist can provide valuable planning guidance and expert assistance in management of these problems.
