ABSTRACT

The central theme in hybrid systems is the combining of computing strategies. Both expert systems and neural networks are well established paradigms in the field of artificial intelligence. This chapter explores methodological issues involved in combining these paradigms within hierarchical structures. The computing strategies include the use of expert systems, neural networks, decision tables, and barrels (of biological origin), all in hierarchical and hybrid structures. Demonstrations involve several problems and illustrate expert system and neural network relations of several types.
