ABSTRACT

Infertility is a major disorder affecting approximately one in six couples. One in six infertile women have mechanical infertility, half of whom are affected by inadequate ovulatory function. In this chapter, a brief overview of the pertinent physics is attempted to describe the clinical use of the transvaginal probe in general and in the diagnostic as well as the invasive management of the infertile patient in particular. The general technique of transvaginal sonography (TVS) is then described. TVS is becoming more and more popular in the general field of gynecology, and in infertility in particular. The chapter also attempts to highlight its advantages in the management of the infertile patient. Because the technique confers certain advantages and is relatively simple to master, it seems that it will soon become a major tool for use in institutions and even private offices.
