ABSTRACT

Of all the well-known modem sport disciplines there are few which can be distinguished from others in some special way, and which have particular value and nobility. It can be said, and it is not only the authors’ opinion, that rowing, together with track-and-field, swimming, and cycling, represents this long-term tradition and popularity. Here the opinion of Marchesi, 1 though somewhat controversial, can be cited “… that however the programme of the Olympic Games constantly grows, the revolutionary reduction of acknowledged disciplines can be assumed, but neither track-and-field nor rowing will ever be touched …”
