ABSTRACT

Recent developments in sports biomechanics, which cover many sports including skiing, could have a strong impact on coaching and training methods. A knowledge of sports biomechanics has in the past been applied to ski coaching and to training, and in some cases this has led to an improvement in performance. In an actual ski competition, athletes can sometimes only win the event by adopting principles of skiing techniques which are based on biomechanical investigation. For example, in the history of ski jumping, there has been a big change in body motion during the air phase which was strongly influenced by the results of biomechanical investigation. It is not surprising, therefore, that in recent years biomechanical information has become more attractive for many coaches. These powerful developments in sports biomechanics will bring significant benefits to top athletes and also to beginners for their safety and recreational enjoyment.
