ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews research related to cancer and exercise. It discusses guidelines and recommendations for using exercise as a rehabilitative intervention in cancer patients. Cancer is the leading cause of death behind heart disease; yet, the application of exercise principles to oncology rehabilitation has been tested by relatively few controlled studies. Dietz suggested that oncology rehabilitation should begin as early as possible and continue throughout the convalescence. Therapy for cancer can be considered under four categories: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institutes of Health are good sources of information for exercise leaders and researchers who have not had prior experience working with cancer patients. Exercise shows promise in promoting functioning and feelings of well–being in cancer patients.
