ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on horizontal flow systems since most of the European systems studied were of this type. However, late in the study, some data became available from vertical flow systems. The chapter aims to help the potential constructors/operators design and build safe plants and, in particular, help them avoid making mistakes which have produced poor results. The use of reeds for the treatment of sewage was first investigated in Germany by Seidel and Kickuth in the 1960s. Since then, about 500 reed bed treatment systems (RBTS) have been constructed in Western Europe since 1984. The advantages claimed for RBTS systems include: low construction costs, low operating costs and a possible treatment solution for very small flows previously untreated. Some of the beds planted in autumn had to be replanted the following spring. The system should be inspected on, at least, a weekly basis to begin with; after or three growing seasons, this may be reduced.
