ABSTRACT

In September 1989, the Hardin County Board of Education was informed that the discharge permit for the sand filter utilized for the treatment of wastewater at Lynnvale Elementary School would not be renewed by Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection. A number of existing Constructed Wetlands (CW) systems were reviewed by the Board of Education before making the final decision to proceed with the design of a CW at Lynnvale Elementary School. The maximum daily wastewater design flow was 1800 gal/day, based on actual water usage during the previous 12 months. The original plan specified that the second cell be unlined in order to facilitate percolation of some of the treated wastewater. Upon excavation of the second cell, a layer of sand was discovered that would lead to an increased percolation rate. The amount of discharge from the CW system needs to be studied in order to determine the amount of subsurface lateral trenches required for final disposal.
