ABSTRACT

The City of San Antonio, Texas plans to clean up Mitchell Lake, an old city-owned sludge containment reservoir in South San Antonio, by constructing a wetlands and reuse reservoir. Several volunteer groups are helping the city construct a wetlands wildlife refuge at the north end of Mitchell Lake. Treated effluent from a local sewage treatment plant will supplement rainfall as the water source. The Mitchell Lake area has a long history relating to San Antonio’s wastewater management. The Mitchell Lake Recovery Advisory Subcommittee was created February 25, 1987, upon the recommendation of the 201 Wastewater Advisory Committee to the San Antonio City Council. The wetlands project will use waste water from the Leon Creek Sewage Treatment Plant in South San Antonio to supplement rain water run-off. The two-phase Wetlands Master Plan calls for the creation of a marshland-wetland-mudflat out of the decant basins and polders with its own permanent water supply.
