ABSTRACT

Control-mastery theory (CMT or CM) is a comprehensive, integrated psychoanalytic theory of mind, pathogenesis, and treatment It is based on a model of mental functioning that has a high degree of explanatory and predictive power. It is consistent with and open to findings from related scientific disciplines such as cognitive, developmental, and evolutionary psychology. It was formulated by Joseph Weiss (1971, 1989, 1990a, 1990b, 1992, 1993b, 1994a, 1995b, 1997b, in press; Weiss, Sampson, & The Mount Zion Psychotherapy Group, 1986) and has been extensively researched by the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group (SFPRG), which is headed by Joseph Weiss and Harold Sampson.
