ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview of John Davis, who is a senior lecturer in the department of psychology at the University of Warwick. He sees many affinities betweeen his roles as educator and as therapist, and finds the task of establishing productive working alliances with his students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, an absorbing one. John has always combined his academic work with clinical practice and feels his primary identity to be that of practitioner rather than academic. He sees the process of undertaking psychotherapy research as providing a valuable educative experience for the researcher, but is more sceptical about the value of research findings for the practitioner. The achievements from which he takes most satisfaction lie in his contributions to relationships—in his private life, as educator and as therapist. He describes these as the primary sources for his self-regard.
