ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview of Brian Thorne, who is the director of student counselling at the University of East Anglia, where he has been since 1974. He is also a partner in the Norwich Centre, an independent counselling and training unit committed to the person-centred approach which was founded in 1980 and serves Norwich and the surrounding area. Brian has played a leading role in the development of student counselling throughout the tertiary sector of education and was chairman of the Association for Student Counselling from 1976 to 1980. As a committed Christian he has been particularly concerned to relate theological insights and institutional church life to the practice of therapy and his booklet entitled Intimacy is a powerful example of his attempt to move across traditional boundaries in the search for a more holistic approach both to therapy and to human living. It is this theme of moving across traditional boundaries that is discussed in the interview.
