ABSTRACT

For the purpose of this chapter, the dominant Arabs are identified as those from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. They will be referred to as the ‘Northern’ Arabs, to distinguish them from the ‘Southern’ Arabs of the Gulf states, which include the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia — whose nationals are ethnically and culturally Arab.
