ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with basic statistical description and graphical methods for displaying data. This is important because it creates familiarity with the data set and identifies the responses which are typically given and the range of responses offered by subjects. Many texts provide an introduction to statistics and a detailed description of basic statistical methods. Several that integrate the use of statistical computer packages such as small-scale primary surveys or MINITAB are listed in the bibliography. Small-scale primary surveys or other forms of primary data collection are common for projects in which the research student is working alone and is responsible for planning and carrying out the study including data collection and analysis. In terms of statistical analyses, many of the restrictions and limitations of small-scale surveys are effectively removed and more extensive and more sophisticated analyses can be undertaken.
