ABSTRACT

The ROLLOUT project’s overall aim is to evaluate a Representational Epistemological (REEP) approach to the design of user-centered IT systems to support complex problems and conceptual learning. ROLLOUT is the particular graphical software tool that the project is developing and evaluating using the REEP approach. This chapter provides a summary of understanding of the nature of this problem and to describe challenges facing the development of an effective user-centered IT system to support it. Bakery planning and scheduling are complex activities, involving multiples levels, over a range of time scales and multiple points of view. Hence, a variety of methods have been used to examine the nature of the problem from different perspectives. An effective tool should address the inherent complexities of the process of baking. Baking involves many and varied process stages. An effective tool must be able to cope with variability of bakery setups, which of differ along a number of dimensions.
