ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on considering what a team work training needs analysis would need to elicit to ensure that the training and development requirements of a team are understood. A trend in team training is to move towards an examination of team training requirements by defining team competencies. This is a process which requires “starting at the end and working backwards”, due to the fact that the analyst begins by defining the required performance and works back from this to define the requisite information. Cannon-Bowers et al identified eight team work skills that an effective team would be expected to demonstrate. The eight skills are adaptability, shared situation awareness, performance monitoring and feedback, leadership/team management, interpersonal relations, co-ordination, communication and decision making. Team work attitudes are those that have been shown to have a direct bearing on the team’s interaction processes and on the ability of an individual to flourish in a team context.
