ABSTRACT

This chapter performs a comparative exposure assessment to musculoskeletal load of the upper extremity by applying selected evaluation schemes. It examines several workplaces that involved repetitive tasks using the CUELA measuring system. The exposure assessment for each workplace was repeatedly conducted using the same data but other evaluation schemes. Physical work load may provoke musculoskeletal complaints, disorders or even diseases. According to national labour statistics, health-related absenteeism caused by musculoskeletal disorders have accounted for a nearly constant 25- to 30-percent rate in Germany over the last several years and still lead the field. A literature review revealed the following risk factors: the repetitiveness, awkward and/or static posture and movements, forceful actions/exertions, lack of recovery and work organisation as well as several additional factors, e.g. vibration, use of gloves, and so on.
