ABSTRACT

The chapter examines the ergonomic issues associated with the presentation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) images. The development of a CCTV task taxonomy is discussed and the impact on operator performance of picture organisation is reviewed. In a programme to examine the most efficient way of looking at groups of CCTV images CCD tested different ways of presenting motorway pictures. The experiment examined the effects on driver performance of different “patch” arrangements on a set of cab-mounted CCTV screens. Under laboratory conditions drivers ran through simulations involving different length trains and using the CCTV images to detect a range of targets of varying difficulty. The study found that there would be no significant deterioration in target detection, as the number of scanned views increased to 12 though the time required to scan the images increased.
