ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the second stage of work concerned with the development of a low cost simulator for Night Vision Goggle (NVG) training. It extends previous work on the digital creation of simulated NVG images of the resolution chart targeted at NVG eye piece adjustment training. The chapter concerns the development of a similar digital manipulation technique aimed at creating simulated NVG imagery to support object recognition training. One of the fundamental skills a pilot using an NVG would require is the ability to focus the NVG. Failure to achieve appropriate NVG focal adjustment might lead to poor visual acuity and visual fatigue. To assess physical fidelity, NVG photo-images and simulated NVG images are displayed side by side to subjects who are then asked to identify the image that they feel is the NVG photo-image.
