ABSTRACT

Human sexuality represents a tremendous potential within the human community. It embodies the power to bond people together, to create new life and to influence the construction of kinship, community and the entire social structure. At the same time, however, it represents an extremely potent means to dominate, to manipulate and to oppress. In other words, the potential represented by human sexuality is not only great, it is fundamentally ambiguous. Like all human power and capacity, it can be used for good or evil. It will usually exhibit both positive and negative consequences. And regardless of the fact that most people today view human sexuality as a private affair, the potential ramifications of human sexual involvement are social, cultural and intergenerational.
