ABSTRACT

Japan has become a hot destination among mainland Chinese students since the 1970s despite, unlike the United States, Canada, or Australia, not allowing Chinese students to become its citizens. With regard to the numbers of Chinese students, Japan is second only to the United States. With the improvement of China’s economy and the enhancement of Chinese people’s living standards, more and more Chinese students have been able to afford to enter the famous universities with rich traditions and long histories in England, France and Germany. In other words, unlike earlier overseas students, a number of mainland Chinese students now prefer studying in Western Europe. Compared with other Chinese new immigrant communities overseas, the Chinese students have been better welcomed by the host countries. However, these two groups of Chinese students have to face some tougher questions than their contemporaries studying in the United States, Canada and Australia would do.
