ABSTRACT

Generally speaking, new migrants from Fujian nowadays are mainly from Changle, Fuqing, Lianjiang, and Pingtan, four major illegal emigration countries close to provincial capital Fuzhou, as well as from Mingxi in inland Fujian. So far, three emigratory patterns can be identified insofar as the Fujianese emigration is concerned. The first pattern concerns those who are smuggled out of Fujian by organised human trafficking groups. The alarming tragedy of the Golden Venture that carried about 300 people from Changle and ran aground offshore Rockaway Beach, New York, on 6 June 1993, is a good case in point. Pattern two is most important system currently utilized by Chinese new migrants to go to overseas. Of them, contract labour, trade delegations and tourism are three major types that need to be mentioned. Third pattern: Emigration under the cover of a trade delegation is another new channel worth noting. This channel can generally be used only by migrants of a certain educational level.
