ABSTRACT

The Guangdong Provincial Liaison Committee for Compatriots from Overseas, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan suggested the following to the Provincial Government to assist those overseas Chinese projects which had experienced financial difficulties. The Asian financial crisis caught many diaspora Chinese entrepreneurs by surprise. The objective of the investigations was to find out how the Asian financial crisis had affected enterprises funded by overseas Chinese in the province and how the government could help them to overcome the difficulties they had encountered. Case materials from Chaozhou and Shanwei will be used to highlight the impact of the Asian crisis on local regions, and a series of government policies, initiated by the provincial and local governments, to assist overseas Chinese entrepreneurs to overcome the problems they have encountered, will be evaluated. During the Asian crisis, many countries in the region depreciated their currencies massively.
