ABSTRACT

There are two broad answers to this question. In the first place, no matter how affluent our society becomes, the necessity to work will still remain the centre of our existence. Secondly, the nature of work is changing so rapidly at the present time that many people are bewildered by it, and sociologists believe they can help them to avoid many of the mistakes made in the past, especially during the first Industrial Revolution. Where sociology can help is in deciding what kind of authority is relevant for the factory of the present day. In the past supervisors were responsible for initiating a productive process. They organized the moving of materials, they set up the jobs, and once the process was under way they watched over the human beings who carried it through. Of course, sociologists are not the only social scientists to be interested in such problems and in their practical solution.
