ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a history of thinking on multiprojects and programmes in particular. It defines various types of multiprojects, and discusses the particular nature of programmes, their interface with projects, and other types of multiproject and operations. A programme is a collection of projects contributing to a common objective; a portfolio is a collection of projects sharing resources. Many different types of multiprojects have been recognized. Some of these are: programmes; portfolios; project networks; project-based organizations; and project-orientated organizations. Martina Huemann defines a project-orientated organization as one which: defines management by projects as its organizational strategy; applies projects and programmes as temporary organizations; and so on. Projects have smart objectives. These are: specific; measurable; achievable; realistic; and timelined. The objectives of a project are clear, precise and can be well defined quantitatively. The output from a megaproject usually has to be delivered on a given day, and considering its size, Heathrow Terminal 5 would count as a megaproject.
