ABSTRACT

The quality of seeds has a profound influence on the economic production of agricultural crops of all species. Consequently, there has been a wealth of papers reporting the result of differences in seed quality on seedling emergence and crop yield in a wide range of species. These have been reviewed and discussed by several authors (e.g., Perry, 1972, 1976, 1980a, 1982; Powell, Matthews, and Oliveira, 1984; Powell, 1988; TeKrony and Egli, 1991). It is not the aim of this chapter to provide a complete catalogue of seed quality effects, but to illustrate how seed quality influences crop establishment, growth, and yield with representative references from a wide range of crops.
